Jeb Cain watched in awe as Azkadellia bustled about in the kitchen. It wasn’t the fact that she knew what to do in a kitchen that surprised him. Since the healers decided that Az needed something to focus on besides the aftermath of her possession, she’d been spending a lot of time in the palace kitchens. Jeb, himself, had never been in to watch her work. He was her guard, not a chef. He stood outside and made sure no one disrupted his charge. Except for today.
Jeb had been contemplating the tile mosaic on the wall opposite the kitchen door when he heard a loud crash come from the kitchen. He rushed in, imaging all kinds of terrible scenarios - and stopped dead at the sight before him.
Az was glowing. Almost literally. Her skin had a rosy tint from the heat of the stoves, her face covered in a light sheen of moisture; her whole being seemed to emit a soft white light. Her day dress was covered by a white apron, splattered here and there with an unsightly greenish-brown stain. But the thing that he couldn’t take his thoughts or his eyes from was the smile. In all his months as her personal guard, not once had he seen her smile like she was right now.
He’d seen the soft smile she saved for her sister and his father, the tolerant one for Glitch, the slightly apologetic smile she used on her parents and Raw; he’d even seen the pained one she used when she knew people were staring and whispering. This one... this one was wide and full. Beautiful. Her hazel eyes were sparkling as she added this and that to a large boiling pot.
He didn’t even know what had caused the crash, and he couldn’t bring himself to care.
He’d not been happy with his assignment when he’d approached Ahamo for a position after the eclipse and the clean up, but he kept his mouth shut. He wasn’t stupid. Ahamo was Az’s father, and he wasn’t dim enough to insult the princess in his presence. Jeb had told his father he felt uncomfortable guarding the oldest princess and knew as soon as that glare was turned in his direction he would get no sympathy from that corner. His father had spoken softly, but the words were powerful.
"Remember what it was like in that suit?
Seeing, but not being able to do anything about what was happening? You think it was a miracle I survived with my sanity intact? I only had to survive eight annuals. It’s been fifteen for her."
It had given him a whole new appreciation for what Az had suffered at the hands of the witch. He’d never complained again.
He hadn’t been able to think about things from that perspective when he’d been given his assignment; he could only feel resentment. Azkadellia may not have been the monster who’d done those horrible things to his family, his friends, his people, but unfortunately that monster had been wearing her face. It took him a long time before he could even look her in the eyes without knowing anger was burning in his. That pained smile was one he saw often in the beginning. Eventually though, he saw how much fear she still held in her heart. How much guilt. You would have had to be blind to not see her flinch whenever someone alluded to the fifteen years she’d been possessed. Be deaf to not hear the screams and whimpers on the other side of her door at night. It was hard to stay angry when she was being so strong, trying so hard to dig herself out of the darkness.
He’d found himself praying for her. He was not a religious man by nature, his life had been too hard to put stock in anything but the gun on his hip, but he found himself praying on the off chance that there was someone to listen, to help her find the light. In this moment, seeing her smile and her sparkling eyes, Jeb found it hard not to believe in miracles.
Her eyes meeting his brought him from his reverie. "What was that bang?"
Az’s brows drew together until she finally understood what he was asking. "Sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you. I just dropped a pot."
Jeb shrugged. "It’s okay. I was getting bored out there anyway, mind if I sit in here for a while?"
Her smile seemed to glow brighter at his simple request. He made a note to try and make her smile more often. He pulled up a stool nearby and took a seat, keeping all entrances in view. He had a job to do after all; the princess wouldn’t be hurt on his watch. Gazing once more on her smiling lips, Jeb was surprised to realize that protecting Azkadellia was more than just duty now but couldn’t find it in himself to be afraid of the change. Sitting silently beside her in the kitchen and basking in her glow made it seem so obvious, so simple.
He tried to engage her in conversation again. "What are you making?"
"Muglug. Would you like to be a taste tester?"
A prickle of unease wove its way through him but he shrugged it off. "Sure."
She grinned at him for a moment like he hung the moon, before focusing once again on the boiling pot in front of her. Jeb found himself studying her more intently than usual. A foreign emotion bubbled inside of him, demanding recognition. He realized what was happening as she looked up again and met his eyes. Her smile faded slowly, but her eyes still glowed with happiness...and something else.
In that moment it became startlingly clear: Jeb Cain was falling in love with the Princess Azkadellia.
And he had a sneaking suspicion that the feeling was mutual.
At that moment he decided. Even if the soup tasted horrible, he’d smile and say it was delicious. Anything to keep that glow alive.

DG watched in awe as the rain poured down outside her bedroom window. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen a storm this powerful. There wasn’t a lot of lightning but the drops were fat and looked heavy. Overcome with a sudden desire she made sure she wasn’t wearing white, as that would be bad, before running out of her room barefoot. She heard the clomp of Cain’s boots and swore. She’d forgotten about him. She picked up speed, sliding around corners and into the wall. When she reached the stairs she didn’t even slow down. She propped her hip on the banister and glided down with her arms outstretched for balance, loving the feel of the air rushing around her. It reminded her of her much missed motorcycle. She had so much speed when she reached the bottom of the stairs that she left the ground for a few feet before she landed hard, stumbling as she caught her balance. She barely paused.
She flung open the door and rain out into the rain feeling giddy, despite the angry shouts of her Tin Man. He was always so serious and palace life was boring, he needed this as much as she did. She wasn’t surprised to see Az already waiting for her. A memory of another storm came to mind as she gripped her sisters hand tightly, pulling her along. When she could feel the rain unobstructed she opened her arms wide and threw her head back, spinning in circles as she laughed in delight. She danced in a circle around Az who stood still as she was cleansed. She knew this was more than just a game to her dear sister. She saw Cain skidding to a stop a few feet away and she approached him with a grin. Before he could start his usual tirade she materialized a bright red umbrella and handed it to him. She knew he wouldn’t leave them in the open without protection, she also knew he didn’t trust anyone else to watch over them. She gave him the umbrella as a token of thanks.
“Please.” she pleaded, meeting his gaze. She hugged him quickly when he gave a terse nod before rushing back to Az’s side.
She stood in the rain at her sister’s elbow for a long moment, just lending support before she decided that enough was enough. With a grin she grabbed both her sisters hands in hers and spun her in a circle making her laugh loudly. They skipped and danced around each other, barefoot and dripping, for almost thirty minutes as they laughed and giggled and remembered times long past. She felt her Tin Man’s gaze more than once and lifted her eyes to his when she felt them again. They shared a meaningful glance before she focused on her sister once again. They only went inside when they were soaked to the bone and the rain began to dissipate. Cain walked directly behind them covering them with the bright red umbrella on the trek back to the castle. Once inside he let the umbrella slip closed and they trudged up the stairs with a rueful glance from Cain. They dropped Az off at her room and walked slowly in silence back to hers. He entered with her, setting the umbrella against the wall by the balcony doors and she watched him seat himself on her sofa as he had so many times before.
“I’m going to shower and change Cain, I’ll be right back.”
“Dress warm Princess, we need to have a chat.”
She giggled again, “Yes, we do. I’d expect nothing less.”
Once she was warm and dry once again she settled in the chair nearest Cain.
“Okay, I’m ready to be yelled at.”
“That was stupid. You could have been killed on those stairs and you nearly gave me a heart attack when you barreled out of your room at top speed.”
“I am truly sorry about that last part. I just got so excited I forgot that you were right outside my door, I didn’t mean to worry you.”
“The stairs.” he pointed out.
“Not sorry for that. That was so much fun!” she bounced in her seat.
“Never again.” he demanded meeting her eyes for the first time. She felt her happiness leave her at the real worry she saw in his eyes.
She nodded slowly, never taking her eyes from his, wanting him to know she was serious. He let out a deep breath before he spoke again.
“Are you gonna tell me what that was about?”
She sighed, “Az and I used to dance in the rain when we were children. We both needed to feel that innocence again. For Az it was a cleansing of sorts. It was very important Cain. I promise it wont happen every time it rains, I cant say it’ll never happen again because I’m not sure it wont.”
“Okay, I can let this go this time, but dammit DG why couldn’t you have just told me that instead of running like your life depended on it?”
“Cain, palace life is boring! I don’t know why you even stayed, there’s nothing for you to do here. You needed a good chase as much as I needed the rain.”
“I stayed here to protect you! Do you want me to leave?”
She snapped her mouth shut, reeling back. How could she have gone from deliriously happy to devastated in less that twenty minutes?
“How could you ask me that?” she whispered.
He didn’t answer, she didn’t expect him too. Her gaze wandered to the rain again. Her and Cain had a wordless understanding. They avoided all talk of the feelings growing inside them, choosing instead to remain friends. She though it went without saying that she needed him here as much as he needed to be here. Apparently she was wrong. Her eyes slipped closed as the tears came.
“Do you want to be here Cain?” she asked though her pain.
She heard his sharp breath intake of air but kept her eyes on the rain. She didn’t hear him move until he was kneeling in front of her. He gently turned her face toward his with his fingers on her chin.
“I’m right where I wanna be Deeg. Don’t doubt that.”
“Then why ask that?”
“I had to be sure. You’ve been acting weird lately, what’s wrong?”
His fingers brushed her jaw line gently as he spoke, his gaze never wavering from hers.
“I’m just overwhelmed is all. I needed time to adjust. I don’t remember this life Cain, I remember my family and growing up here, but I don’t remember the grooming and the pointless lessons in etiquette and politics. Its just getting to be a bit too much, and then you’ve been getting distant with me. I thought maybe you were getting bored.”
“Not bored, DG. I’m never bored around you. Everyone has been a bit down lately it seems, I guess the rain came at the right time. Get some sleep DG, and pray you don’t get a cold.”
She watched as he stood and walked to the door. When his hand was on the knob she found her courage and her voice.
“Are we ever going to talk about what’s between us?”
He paused, his eyes finding hers before he spoke.
“Someday, Princess. Someday soon.”
And with a tip of his hat he was gone. DG sighed as she stood and headed to bed. Someday had better get here quick because she was running out of patience with her Tin Man.
And as luck would have it DG did get a cold, and Someday became a reality about a month later. It coincidently was another storm. This time she didn’t run, but walked with her Tin Man and his red umbrella outside into the tempest. There, in front of all the droplets, Cain wrapped his arms around her and sealed the unspoken promise with a kiss. The umbrella lay forgotten.
For years, on their anniversary it would rain. And each time they walked under that red umbrella and kissed in the rain.

A/N: Okay, that went someplace I wasn’t expecting but *shrugs* I do what the plot bunnies tell me. I hope it makes sense. I had a bit of trouble with the ending. Review please!
A/N: Okay this is the third and final installment of the Matchmaking Trilogy (someday I might even put them together on FF.net……not today though. J ) . I hope it was worth the wait! Again, this has not been beta’d as I don’t have one ( if you want to offer your services that would be amazing!) so all mistakes are mine. As always…I don’t own Tin Man, but I do own the DVD and it is currently in a position of respect on my TV stand.
( Here Be Smut! )
A/N: Here is the much requested companion fic to Matchmaking. Hope it was worth the wait! J
Cain stood stock still for about three minutes wondering if he was that transparent. He shook himself physically before sticking his head in the door to the library.
“DG?”
DG’s head whipped around and she blushed, nervously tugging on a lock of hair. Cain had the irrational urge to wrap his fingers around the curl and pull her into an embrace. He shook himself again, this time mentally.
“You about done in here? It’s getting late.”
She nodded, her eyes downcast. It wasn’t until she stopped in front of him that he realized she was staring at his hand. She looked up earnestly.
“Cain, why did you take it off?”
He frowned. “Take what off?”
She blinked. “Your ring.”
“Oh, that. Um…it was time. I’m not living in the past anymore.”
He cleared his throat. No amount of torture would make him admit that he’d been thinking of DG when he slipped the gold band off his fingers and put it away for Jeb sometime down the road. Despite what Ambrose said he would not make a fool of himself. He met her eyes again and motioned her out the door.
The walk to her rooms was silent, both too lost in their thoughts to come up with meaningless conversation. DG sighed softly. She trusted Glitch but he was…well, Glitch. He must have been mistaken. Cain would never see her as anything more that a kid. His duty. He took his oath very seriously, a fact which made her love him all the more. He was like John Wayne, only hotter. She giggled, drawing Cain’s attention.
“What’s so funny Princess?”
“Oh, I was just thinking…you’re very much like an old school cowboy. Like John Wayne.”
“I’m sorry DG. I don’t know what that means.”
“You’re so honorable. You took your word very seriously when you promised to take care of me.”
She looked down, “It’s why you stayed.”
He stopped and she looked back in confusion.
“That’s not why I stayed DG.”
“Then why? You cant possibly enjoy being my babysitter.”
“I don’t think of my job like that. I want to make sure you’re safe. If something happened to you…”
His eyes bored into hers and DG didn’t think she could breathe.
“Cain…” she breathed softly.
Abruptly she was pushed against the wall. She gazed wide eyed up at Cain and nearly swooned at the heat in his stare. This was something that only happened in her fevered dreams. She was sure she’d wake up wanting soon, but until then she was going to enjoy this. He opened his mouth to speak and she pressed her lips to his before he could utter a sound. He stood motionless for half a second in surprise before he pressed her bodily into the wall. As she felt the length of him against her DG came to the realization that this was not a dream. With a small whimper her arms came around his shoulders as she stood on her tip toes to reach him better. His kiss was powerful, sending shockwaves of desire through her all the way down to her toes. She willed her legs not to weaken but they did anyway. She opened for him when his tongue slid along her bottom lip, wanting and needing to taste him. She moaned as his tongue glided along hers before he tickled the roof of her mouth. She couldn’t believe this was happening. Wyatt Cain was kissing her. Her.
She whimpered as he pulled back, only now remembering that they were in an open hallway.
“Wyatt…” she tried his name, she loved the feel of it on her tongue.
He moaned as he leaned into her, obviously fighting for control.
“DG, you were never a duty to me.” his voice gentled, “I love you Deeg.”
She felt the stinging of tears. She forced them back, she wasn’t one of those girls.
“Oh Wyatt, I love you too.”
His smile was a beautiful sight to behold. She couldn’t help but grin in response. She suddenly felt like running, screaming to anyone and everyone that Wyatt loved her. Only his arms around her prevented her from doing just that. He pulled back but threaded his fingers through hers and he tugged her down the hall to her rooms. He let her go in first, eyes full of heated promise as he closed the door softly behind him.

A/N: Okay, I will give a cookie to the people who catch the bones reference. Hope you like it, and if I get enough good responses from this I may write a smutty bit as the final chapter for this plot bunny that just wont die. J
Short but Sweet!A/N: no beta again. I really need to get one of those. *shrugs* oh well, I’ll do it later. No Time To Waste!! Here is my entry for the Quote Challenge 02 at tm_challenge at Livejournal.com. I hope you like! I even managed (somehow) to make it about my favorite ship! Damn I’m good.
Ambrose/Glitch sighed as he watched DG and Cain. They really needed to get done with this dance they do, it was very annoying to watch. Azkadellia, of course, thought it was hilarious that her baby sister was so love struck that she couldn’t form a complete sentence without blushing in Cain’s presence. Cain was no better. Really, it was a disgrace to all mankind. He was a grown man for God’s sake, and there he was standing there as the woman he loved talked his ear off. He was acting like a fool. Ambrose had had enough. Glitch thought they needed a push. So, together, they devised a plan. It was quite simple really. He was going to talk to each of them privately, and if that didn’t work…well, Glitch’s suggestion to lock them in a closet sounded particularly fitting.
Later that night Glitch was sitting in the library with DG. Cain was waiting in the hall for his princess in his position as guard. He stumbled over and plopped down gracelessly into the chair next to her.
“DG?”
“Yes Glitch?”
She didn’t look up from her book.
“How do you always know?”
“Know what?”
“Which one I am?”
“Ambrose is all stuffy and advisor-like. You’re Glitch.”
He nodded. That made sense. He had the vague notion he was supposed to be doing something when his other half jerked back in control and reminded him sternly what he was there for. Right.
“DG?”
She sighed, “Yes?”
“Why haven’t you snagged your Tin Man yet?”
Her head shot up in surprise. “What?”
“Ya know Doll, he won’t be single forever. He’s a catch! Some woman is gonna scoop him up and then where will you be?”
“Glitch? What are talking about?” she blushed.
“That! I can see it! And if I can see it then everyone else must too, except blockhead of course. You blush like a little girl every time you see him. Its very…well, Ambrose thinks it’s annoying and your sister just thinks its cute. Your mother and Ahamo aren’t disapproving either honey. You have no excuse.”
She shifted in her chair and glanced at the door.
“He doesn’t see me that way Glitch. He still loves Adora.”
“Of course he still loves her, but he loves you too. She was his wife DG, but she’s been gone a long time, eight years for him. He’s ready to move on. Have you noticed his ring is gone? It has been since he took his position as your guard.”
DG sat stunned for a moment. “Are you sure Glitch?”
“I wouldn’t be telling you to make your move if I wasn’t. Ambrose sees it too, it was his idea actually.”
“What was?”
“oh! Um, I don’t think I was supposed to tell you that.” he mumbled and felt a flare of annoyance from the Ambrose part of him. Well, he tried. At least he got his point across.
DG smiled softly and nodded. “Thanks Glitch.”
“No problem Doll!….what did I do?”
Ambrose took over as DG’s laughter filled the room. Now, for the hard part. Ambrose rose stiffly from the chair and straightened his coat as he walked to the door. He glanced at Cain briefly as he stood.
“Mr. Cain?”
Cain eyed him for a moment before nodding in greeting. “Ambrose.”
Ambrose grinned. Cain was the only one except for DG and Azkadellia who could tell which one he was at any given moment, just from a glance.
“I have to tell you something Cain, and before you try to kill me; remember that I can kill you with my pinky.”
Cain looked less than impressed but the flare in his eyes made him sure his message got through.
“What do you want?”
“For you to take DG someplace and ravage her.” he stated simply.
Cain stood abruptly and met his gaze. His blues eyes were on fire. Ambrose stiffened but kept his eyes level.
“Watch your mouth, Headcase.” he growled.
“Seriously Cain. She won’t be waiting forever for you to make your move. If you don’t act soon she’ll be married off to some nobleman with little princesses or princes running around. Then where will you be?”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I can create stuff out of nothingness. I can alter the fabric of reality. So please, quit being a knucklehead. You guys are perfect for each other, everyone can see that. She loves you, you love her and nobody is saying you can’t be together.”
“She’s the Princess-”
“Oh do be quiet.”
He grinned ruefully.
“Excuses. The Queen and The Prince Consort have noticed and you see how you’ve not been removed from your post? They approve. Go get your girl. Before someone else does.”
He walked away briskly without looking back. If that didn’t work he really was going to lock them in a closet.
***
The next day, at the breakfast table, Ambrose noted that every few minutes Cain and DG would lock gazes and smile. Glitch was grinning madly because he’d actually managed to get something right. Ambrose was trying to figure out if this was more or less annoying than them dancing around each other. It a very near thing.

A/N: I was thinking about maybe doing a companion fic from DG and Cain’s point of view showing all the things in between we missed. What do you think? Review Please!
I bought the Tin Man DVD!!!! i ve seen it like 4 freking times in as many days, its really quite scary. this obsession is very bad for my health. lol..but god damn..Wyatt Freaking Cain is HAWT! :D
tin manA/N: Okay, this isn’t Microsoft Word so I’m not sure how it will come out, and it’s my first Tin Man fic (not to mention my first challenge fic) so I hope I’m doing alright. J
Summary: Princess DG is having trouble getting comfortable. Guess who gets to deal with the cranky princess.
Princess DG was uncomfortable. They were royalty for gods sake, weren’t they supposed to live in luxury? Squirming again, she sighed and tried to listen to what Tutor was saying.
“…so can you tell me why the leaders of the north decided that this law needed to be added to the registry?”
He stared expectantly. DG sighed before shrugging.
“I’ve no idea Tutor. Why don’t you tell me?”
“Princess! I can’t teach you if you do not listen. What was it this time? I had your attention for maybe five minutes before you began daydreaming. You can not continue-”
“Will you shut up?”
She shoved her chair away from the table abruptly and stomped away from the slack jawed tutor. She couldn’t take it anymore. If she had to sit for one more minute in an uncomfortable chair and listen to him ramble about diplomacy she honest to god might just explode. The chairs all over the palace were like that: ramrod straight with no padding. It must be left over from the witches reign, is the only reason DG can think of for their presence.
Slamming the door as she left she couldn’t help but wonder what exactly the point of having a body guard was when he was never around anymore. Wyatt Cain had apparently taken his oath to the Mystic Man very seriously because hours after the eclipse he’d been outside her door. He hadn’t left since. Well, until about 2 days ago anyway. She’d gotten so used to him being the first thing she saw that when she opened her door and glanced up to meet unfamiliar green eyes she’d nearly tripped. She remembered staring until the guard shifted uncomfortably before shutting herself in her room for the next hour. When Az had come to see why she wasn’t at breakfast all she could say was “Where’s Cain?”
Her sister blinked several times before answering the abrupt question.
“He’s away. He told Mother he had personal business, he’d be back in a few days.”
She’d been quiet at first, wondering what personal business he could have had. Then she’d been upset. Why hadn’t he told her he was leaving? Did she mean so little to him? Then the anger came. She was snappy and sarcastic with everyone, even Az. She just didn’t understand why her Tin Man had left her without a word. They had still been close, even though he was her guard; extremely so. She told him everything. She had believed he’d done the same, but obviously not. How could he? Well, when he got back she would not bore him with her tales anymore. They would keep it professional. DG rolled her eyes, making the guard stationed at the door to gardens look at her strangely. She ignored him and kept moving. She knew better than anyone that the moment Cain came back through those doors she’d give him a good smack followed by a rant, complete with swears and chest-poking, before hitting him again for good measure. Then she’d storm off in a huff and never speak to him again. At least, that’s what she wanted to do. No, she wanted to rage at him, ask him why he left, beg him never to her again. But she knew she’d never show her emotions like that, even for Cain. This sudden need for Cain to be by her side when for months she’d complained about him stalking her confused her. She didn’t want to examine the hurt she felt too closely. She was sure she didn’t want to acknowledge her feelings for Cain. They could only bring heartbreak. He saw her as a kid, nothing more than his duty. She’d learned to live with that until his abrupt departure from her life. Now, the realization that she cared about him more than she’d anticipated was too hard to ignore. It made her moody and standoff-ish and everyone was beginning to notice. Her sister had taken to leaving the dinner table quickly and avoiding her as much as possible. Glitch kept staring like he knew the reason why she was acting that way. And her parents, well, her parents just smiled politely and asked if she was alright every five minutes. It was driving her nuts. She knew the chairs weren’t the reason she was uncomfortable. The chairs were fine. It was herself she was uncomfortable with. She’d been fidgeting all day. Mother had received word from Cain that he’d be home by nightfall and DG was nervous. Being nervous made her irritable, hence yelling at Tutor for no reason. She was going to have to apologize. Again. It seemed like she was apologizing to a lot of people these last few days.
Relishing in her freedom, her guard hadn’t been waiting for her outside the library like usual and she thanked god for small favors, she slipped out to the gazebo. She should have known her guard hadn’t had a sudden lapse in duty. She stopped short at the sight that greeted her. Wyatt Cain was sitting on her swing with his fedora in his hand. She turned quickly, hoping that the wind had masked her arrival, and began back to the castle. His words stopped her.
“Evenin’ Princess.”
She turned to find him watching her over his shoulder.
“Mr. Cain.” she answered with a jerky nod before resuming her swift walk back toward the castle. She did not want to have this conversation right now. Her emotions were too close to the surface. She needed time. She made it three feet before he wrapped a hand around her arm to stop her.
“DG, we need to talk.”
She met his concerned blue eyes with a cool glare.
“I don’t know what you mean Mr. Cain.”
His eyes narrowed.
“What’s with the Mr. Cain business?”
“That is your name, is it not? I’m just trying to keep our interactions professional, Mr. Cain, since you obviously don’t consider me friend enough to say goodbye to.”
“DG-”
“Goodnight, Mr. Cain.”
“STOP!”
His sudden shout made her jump slightly, then his hands were gripping her shoulders tightly and his face was inches from hers.
“Get your hands-”
“If you don’t shut your mouth I’m going to shut it for you.” he growled.
“How dare you speak that way-”
The rest of what she had to say was cut off by his lips on hers.
Caught by surprise she was stiff with shock for about three seconds before she melted into him. His lips were warm and soft and just a little moist, they tasted of coffee and there was something just underneath that she could only identify as Wyatt. His arms came around her and molded her to his front, his hard muscle pressed against her soft curves, and she couldn’t hold back the pleasured whimper. His mouth moved over her, forming words and stealing her breath and thoughts. The kiss wasn’t gentle or soft in any way. It was hot and needy and made her knees weak. His smell surrounded her. Gunpowder, dirt, and his own musky scent. It overpowered her until all she could see was him. The world around them ceased to exist. Her hand came to rest on his face, the stubble abrading her palm slightly. Her other hand was clutching to his coat for dear life, if it weren’t for his arms around her she’d be in a puddle on the ground.
He pulled back slowly, his nose brushing against hers in a deliberate caress as he did so. Her eyes opened slowly to meet his dark ones. Still slightly breathless she stared, silently asking for an explanation. He cleared his throat and she could feel it he was holding her so tightly.
“DG, I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye before I left but I needed to speak with Jeb. You know as well as I do that one look into your eyes and I wouldn’t have been able to leave.”
“I thought…you just left Cain. I thought you were my friend and then you just…”
“I know.” he whispered, “I know and I’m sorry.”
“Why did you kiss me?”
Her voice was quiet, almost a whisper.
His chuckle rumbled through her pleasantly.
“It was the only way I could think of to shut you up. Plus, you have no idea have sexy you are when you’re angry.”
She huffed but a smile was creeping its way onto her face.
“Why’d you need to see Jeb? Is he alright?”
“He’s fine. I needed to talk to him about you.”
“Me?” her brows furrowed in her confusion.
“Yeah, I wanted to ask him how he felt about his father courtin’ a Princess.”
She blinked.
“You’re…you want to court me?”
“Baby doll, I just had my mouth on yours. Of course I want to court you.”
“I assume since you did kiss me that Jeb is okay with this?”
“Well, he called me an idiot when I told him I’d left without saying goodbye, then he said it was about damn time.”
She laughed before stretching up to press her lips to his for a quick kiss that rapidly deepened when his hand slid up her back and into her hair to hold her to him while he slid his tongue along her lips. She opened her mouth to let him in and another whimper escaped her. Her hand slid from her cheek to his neck where she ran her nails through the short hairs that earning a moan from the man wrapped around her. His tongue slid along her slowly, flicking against the roof of her mouth playfully before he pulled back again to let her breathe. He laved open mouth kisses along her jaw and throat and nipped playfully at the juncture of her neck and shoulder before he pulled back completely.
“Let’s go inside Princess.”
Just then she noticed it was getting dark, dinner would be soon and she had apologies to make. She nodded and looped her arm through his as they made their way to the castle.

DG was uncomfortable. She sat in a comfy yellow chair in front of her fireplace waiting for Cain. He’d left to speak with her parents about courting her. She couldn’t stop the worrying and she knew she was squirming in her seat. She couldn’t help it! The man she loved was asking permission to see her as more than a job and if they said no then she’d probably never see him again. She was beginning to panic, he’d been in there for over an hour.
Just then the door opened and Cain walked in. She stood quickly and watched with a glare as he walked past her to sit in the chair she’d just vacated. He stretched his legs out in front of him and crossed them at the ankles before settling his hands on his stomach. She waited ten seconds. Nothing.
“God Dammit, Wyatt Cain. If you don’t tell me right now I will throw you off that balcony.”
His smile was slow and deadly and she felt her knees get weak. She stepped to him and straddled his lap, his legs came up quickly so she wouldn’t fall as his hands slid to her hips.
“Well?” she demanded.
“Your father said he saw this coming. In fact, everyone saw this coming but you. Az and Glitch stopped me just down the hall to hear how it went. Glitch was the only one who knew for sure why I left in the first place.”
Her jaw dropped open at that.
“That little bastard. I’m gonna kill him!”
“Now now, darlin’. You cant go around murdering the help. Sets a bad precedent.”
“He knew and he didn’t tell me. I was going out of my mind!”
“Yes, speaking of that. Your mother tells me you were quite…moody after I left.”
His eyes were laughing at her but his face a emotionless mask, his words mild.
She sat up primly.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
That smile came back and she couldn’t resist. She leaned forward and captured his lips with hers. Suddenly, DG was very comfortable.
